Mr. Cee, Homosexuality, and the Cultural Code of Hip-Hop

mgid-uma-content-mtvFamous DJ Mr. Cee was again busted with a prostitute over the weekend, prompting a remix cultural firestorm over his sexuality. Mr. Cee, in an interview with Hot97, denied that he was gay but acknowledged an addiction of sorts to prostitutes.

But then he dropped this line on the listeners.

“Let’s say if I’m lying, that’s my choice,” Cee proposed, after a Hot 97 DJ began to play Aly-Us’ “Follow Me,” a ’90s dance record often associated with the gay club community. “If I’m lying and I chose not to come out, that’s my choice.”

Rapper to Face Jail After Attempted ‘Illuminati Sacrifice’ Murder Charge

According to a search warrant, the shooting at the now-abandoned dwelling the night of Dec. 26 occurred after prolonged marijuana use. The victim awoke from a drowsy sleep to see El-Amin pointing a gun at his head and saying he needed to be sacrificed, according to the search warrant.The bullet ricocheted off the victim’s hand sending bone and skin fragments into his eye, according to the warrant, but the victim was able to get hold of the gun and shoot El-Amin in the stomach before he ran off.

‘Thrift Shop’ and ‘Harlem Shake;’ Hip-Hop Interlopers Come of Age

And then, inevitably, the adopters and interlopers begin to succeed on their own terms, which leads to phenomena like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s “Thrift Shop” and Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.” For the last few weeks “Thrift Shop” has been the No. 1 song in the country, according to the Billboard Hot 100, and since the beginning of February “Harlem Shake” — more specifically, the first 30 seconds of it — has been the soundtrack for the latest viral dance-video craze. Both songs have been hovering at or near the top of the iTunes sales chart.

Not trying to offend nobody on the committee, but for a record as big as ‘Adorn,’ and it to not be presented as a real performance onstage; it was almost like a segue to an award.
